Somerton, ancient royal town of Wessex, is one of Somerset’s most pleasing 17th century arrangements of town buildings and a castellated market cross make this a town that should be on every visitor’s itinerary. Perfect for a day trip or short break with traditional pubs, specialist shops and free car parking.

The town boasts a 13th century church with impressive carved ceiling, the site of Edward The First’s Court of Assize as well as the Hext Almhouses built in 1626 and information on a walking tour of the town is available from the Tourist Information office in Market Cross Antiques, West Street, Somerton (closed in the winter).

An ideal base for exploring Somerset attractions and the home of the 9 day Somerton Arts Festival with over 30 different events taking place between 9th and 17th July 2010 details here.
