Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery

Castle Hill Norwich, NR1 3JU

Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Standing proudly atop its historic motte, Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery was originally built by William the Conqueror as a Royal Palace. In 2025, its medieval Keep reopened following a major redevelopment restoring it to its
former grandeur and offering an unforgettable visitor experience.

Explore the medieval Keep
Step back through 900 years of history as you explore all five floors of the Castle Keep. From the atmospheric basement, with medieval pier bases and dramatic light sculptures, to the rooftop battlements with breathtaking views across Norwich – England’s most complete medieval city.

In The Gallery of Medieval Life: A British Museum Partnership, over 950 fascinating artefacts reveal the world of those who worked, fought and prayed in medieval Norwich.

Experience the Royal Palace
The Keep’s recreated rooms bring history vividly to life. Imagine King Henry I’s visit to Norwich in 1121 as you step inside the Great Hall for an immersive projection show, sit on the King’s throne or try on medieval costumes. Explore the Great Chamber with its exquisite tapestry and discover the peaceful Chapel, complete with immersive soundscapes.

Discover world-class collections
Alongside the Keep, the museum occupies the former wings of Norwich’s Victorian prison with galleries that feature extensive collections of international importance, including historic and contemporary fine and decorative art, archaeology, and natural history.

Engage with hands-on activities and interactive displays for all ages. Explore the fine specimens of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and more in our Natural History Galleries. Journey through time in our decorative arts displays, home to the world’s most impressive teapot collection. Follow the dramatic story of Boudica’s rebellion against the Romans and the migrations of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings to East Anglia.

The fine art galleries celebrate the work of the Norwich School of Artists, with exquisite land and seascapes alongside a dynamic programme of special exhibitions. Discover the 300-year history of the county’s regiment through the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum’s object-rich displays.

Relax and enjoy
Unwind with a cup of tea in the café overlooking stunning views of the Keep’s east wall, then browse the shop for unique gifts crafted by local makers.

A place to explore, learn and be inspired – where history comes to life at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery.
