Ancient House

Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life, White Hart Street Thetford, IP24 1AA

Discover the history of Thetford and the Brecks in this atmospheric Tudor house, with links to a Punjabi royal family.

Ancient House is a stunning example of Tudor architecture, dating from the late 15th century. Originally built as a merchant’s house and shop, it reflects Thetford’s medieval prosperity and stands as a testament to the town’s rich history.

Now celebrating 100 years as a museum, it offers a fascinating glimpse into life in Thetford through the ages – from the house’s Tudor foundations to the stories of its former occupants.

Explore remarkable objects with local connections and uncover the story of Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Sikh ruler of the Punjab, and his extraordinary family who lived at nearby Elveden Hall. Step into the 1901 kitchen to experience life at the turn of the 20th century, and wander through the tranquil courtyard garden, planted with species from the Tudor period.

With its charming architecture and historical significance, Ancient House is a must-visit for anyone exploring Thetford.
