Rocks by Rail – The Living Ironstone Museum

Cottesmore Iron Ore Mines Sidings, Ashwell Road Cottesmore, LE15 7FF

Discover the living ironstone museum in the heart of Rutland.

Welcome to Rocks by Rail, a Museum in 19 acres of reclaimed ironstone quarry.

Walk back in time to explore the way in which iron ore was extracted in Rutland and the East Midlands from Victorian times.

We have a collection of ironstone quarry related diesel and steam locomotives. Some are fully operational and can be seen at work on our event days.

The Exhibition Centre houses many of our ironstone quarry-related steam and diesel engines, some operational, some in the process of renovation and some that will remain as static exhibits.
