3-4 King's Square York, YO1 7LD

Taste your way through history on a guided tour exploring York’s sweet past.

Step back in time to the 1800s, where York’s founding confectionery families revolutionised chocolate making, building a lasting legacy that turned York into the UK’s chocolate capital.

Uncover the origins of the cocoa bean…
But first, travel back thousands of years to 1200BC in Central America, where ancient tribes discovered the mighty cocoa bean. Follow its journey across Europe, eventually arriving in York where a chocolate legacy was born.

Meet the founding families…
Learn how four entrepreneurial families from York – Tuke, Rowntree, Terry and Craven helped shape the confectionery industry, creating iconic global brands, bringing chocolate to the masses, and forever leaving their mark on both the city, and the world.
