Annual Steam Gala at North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Park Street, Pickering, YO18 7AJ

24th - 27th September

Join us for four fantastic days celebrating the sights and sounds of heritage steam locomotives, all set against the breath-taking backdrop of the North York Moors National Park.

There’s something here for everyone, families, fans and first-timers alike.

This year, we’re thrilled to welcome three amazing visiting locomotives to join our home fleet. Book your tickets and come and soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the buzz along the route and experience an unforgettable showcase of steam traction.

No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley
No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is a renowned member of the LNER A4 Pacific class, visiting to mark the 150th anniversary of the engineer whose name she bears. Built at Doncaster and originally numbered 4498, she entered service in 1937 following a naming ceremony at Marylebone Station, becoming No. 60007 under British Railways. Visiting courtesy of the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust.

T3 Class No. 563
No. 563 is the last surviving member of the T3 class. Built in 1893 to a design by engineer William Adams, the locomotive was donated to the Swanage Railway Trust by the National Railway Museum in 2017.

Following a six-year restoration to full working order in its new lined 1890s Drummond passenger green livery, the 81 tonne T3 hauled its first passenger train since 1945 in October 2023, steaming out of Swanage Station. It escaped scrapping due to the outbreak of WW11 in 1939, and again in 1948 when it helped mark the centenary of Waterloo Station. Visiting courtesy of Swanage Railway Trust.

No. 4079 Pendennis Castle
Pendennis Castle was built in 1924 and made her name in 1925, when the GWR loaned her to the London & North Eastern Railway for trials against Sir Nigel Gresley’s new Pacifics. Outperforming her rivals, she proved hugely popular, and the GWR went on to display her alongside Flying Scotsman at the 1925 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, billed as the most powerful passenger express locomotive in Britain.
