Tornado: The Steam Superstar is Back at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Park Street, Pickering, YO18 7AJ

27th July - 8th August

We're delighted to be welcoming back to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, No. 60163 Tornado, one of Britain's most famous steam locomotives, courtesy of the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust.

From Monday 27 July to Saturday 1 August and Monday 3 August to Saturday 8 August, the legendary locomotive will be hauling special services through the spectacular North York Moors National Park.

Built in the 21st century but inspired by the great express locomotives of the steam age, Tornado has become a household name among railway enthusiasts and the wider public alike. Whether you’re seeing her for the first time or welcoming back an old favourite, this is an experience not to be missed.

Tornado is more than a locomotive. It’s a modern engineering marvel and one of the biggest stars in the heritage railway world.

In the last decade, Tornado has appeared on both the big and small screen, featuring in Paddington 2, taking centre stage in Top Gear’s famous Race to the North, and appearing in our very-own television series, Steam Train Diaries with Paul “Piglet” Middleton.

The locomotive also made history in 2017 when it reached 100mph during night-time testing, becoming the first steam locomotive to achieve the milestone in Britain since the 1960s.

A locomotive with speed, style and star quality, Tornado has earned its reputation as the railway world's very own rock star.
